ATM & Card Reader Fraud: What to Watch For and How to Stay Safe

ATMs and card readers are everyday tools for accessing your money—but they’re also common targets for fraud. Criminals use tactics like card skimming, fake card readers, and other scams to steal your information and drain your account. At Monson Savings Bank, we’re committed to helping you stay informed and protected. Here’s what you need to know to keep your debit card and personal information safe.

Common ATM & Card Reader Scams

1. Card Skimming & Fake Card Readers

Fraudsters attach hidden devices to ATMs or point-of-sale card readers to capture the data from your card’s magnetic strip. These devices often look like part of the machine and may be paired with tiny cameras or fake keypads to steal your PIN.

What to do:

  • Inspect the card reader before inserting your card. If it looks bulky, loose, or misaligned, don’t use it.

  • Gently tug on the card slot—if it moves or feels unusual, it could be a skimmer.

  • Always cover the keypad with your hand when entering your PIN.

2. Card Trapping

A device is inserted into the ATM’s card slot to trap your card. Once you leave, the scammer retrieves it and uses it fraudulently.

What to do:

  • If your card gets stuck, don’t leave. Call your bank immediately using the number on the ATM or your banking app.

3. Cash Trapping

Scammers place a device over the cash dispenser to trap your money. After you leave, they return to collect the cash.

What to do:

  • If the ATM doesn’t dispense your cash but your account is debited, report it to your bank right away.

4. Shoulder Surfing

This low-tech scam involves someone watching you enter your PIN—either by standing too close or using hidden cameras.

What to do:

  • Always cover your bank card and shield the keypad with your hand.

  • Watch for cell phone cameras, mirrors or other tools used to view cards and PINs.

  • Be aware of your surroundings, anyone standing nearby, or any unusual activity. If you feel uncomfortable, go to another ATM or location.

  • Be aware of cashiers taking your card out of sight; instead take it to the register yourself.

Tips for Safe ATM & Card Reader Use

  • Use ATMs and card readers in well-lit, secure locations, preferably inside bank branches or trusted businesses.

  • Avoid using ATMs late at night or in isolated areas.

  • Inspect the ATM and card reader for unusual attachments or loose parts.

  • Never accept help from strangers at an ATM, even if the machine seems to be malfunctioning.

  • Take your receipt and card as soon as your transaction is complete.

  • Set up transaction alerts through your bank’s mobile app to monitor activity in real time.
