Scam Prevention Requires Scam Recognition

Monson Savings Bank knows that a very important part of preventing people from becoming victims of scams is helping them to understand and recognize the various types of scams beforehand. Below are four very common scams everyone should know about.

Romance Scam:

Criminals will establish a romantic relationship online and request money for a “hardship” they have. They ask for money to visit you, but they never do.

Charity Scam:

You get a call or email asking for a donation to a charity you never heard of.  Conduct outside research to look the charity up before you give out your card or account numbers.

Imposter Scam:

You receive a call from a relative asking you to wire money or send gift cards to help them out of trouble, you are told not to tell anyone. This could be a scam.

Lottery Scam:

You receive a call or email congratulating you on being a winner. You are asked to provide upfront payment for fees and taxes. If you are asked to pay first, this is a warning it’s a scam.

Ways to Avoid Scams:

   • Know the Warning Signs

   • Safeguard your personal and financial information.

   • Stop, slow down, and resist pressure to act fast.

   • Talk to someone you trust.

Unfortunately, above is only a selection of the scams used to prey on victims. However, Monson Savings Bank is dedicated to sharing information on scams and strives to help keep our customers and community members safe. For more information of other scams, visit our Safety and Security Blog.
